Besides being a total beauty — Hannah is a bright soul (and also a very talented photographer). When I was thinking about who I wanted to interview for this segment, she immediately popped in my head. Always looking as happy as you can be — she is the demonstration that nothing suits you better than a smile on your face!
Essential beauty step in the morning
Moisturiser, moisturiser, moisturiser. I love how gentle Embryolisse’s lait-crème concentré is and particularly appreciate how it interacts with my make-up routine. For make-up free days I am a huge fan of Eminence Organics’ Stone Crop moisturiser because it’s truly a miracle worker. I discovered the brand in my Canadian best friends’ beauty closet last year and have been hunting it down ever since. (To save you the trouble, theskinsmith.co.uk is the only way to get your hands on the brand on this side of the ocean, contact them by e-mail and tell them it’s urgent!)
Essential beauty step at night
Cleansing my skin before going to bed. I am a konjac sponge convert and have consistently cleansed my skin, every single night, since I was about 12 years old. Even when coming home at 5AM, there is just nothing quite like the feeling of clean, rosy cheeks snuggled against a crisp, cotton pillow cover. My favorite go-to cleanser at the moment is Caudalie’s Grape and Sweet almond cleansing oil. It turns milky when mixed with water, removes every last bit of waterproof mascara and leaves your skin feeling baby soft.
The beauty product that never leaves your purse
I have an issue with lip balms. My issue is that I have an obsession with them.
I have at least three lip balms in every coat pocket that I own, plus some just-in-cases in every bag. Yes, that excludes the 50+ others stored in my bathroom cabinet. I have serious lip balms (the ones that cost you an arm and a leg, hello Elizabeth Arden lip mask), reminding-me-of-childhood lipbalms (Body Shop Raspberry Born Lippy, I know you know what I’m talking about), lip balms that make my lips a little plumper, rosier, cherry bitten. You name it — I have it. Considering the fact that there’s still about half a million undiscovered gems out there, I’d say it’s safe to state that there will be no detoxing in sight for me anytime soon.
The product/habit that changed your beauty routine for ever
Something so simple it’s brilliant — finishing my morning routine with a water spray. Yes, you read that correctly. It started with the discovery of MAC’s Fix+ and evolved into the more gentle/organic likes of Avène Eau Thermale and more recently (and even better) Melvita’s Damask Rose Floral water. It’s super inexpensive, soothes the skin, fixates makeup (which really does stay on all day after spraying) and just gives you this natural glow that no Kimmy K. inspired highlighter could ever give you. I feel strangely naked without it and always have an extra bottle tucked away in my bathroom cabinet.
If you could give only one beauty advice, it would be…
If there’s anything you do, be gentle to the skin you’re in. Simplify your beauty routine, research the products you’re putting on your face and accentuate rather than cover up. My best friend once remarked that the way we choose what products to focus on are, in many ways, metaphors of what we’ve been led to believe is beautiful and how we feel we are supposed to look. Just make sure to do right by you and always, always stay true to yourself.
It’s never the products that make us shine, but the confidence we wear them with.
